Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd (Book Review)

No comments:

"The air in my crumbling attic chamber smelled of roses and formaldehyde."

Review: I wanted to love this book, and I'll admit that in the beginning I did. I absolutely loved it. So let me start by what I didn't like so I can end this review on some positive notes.

I must first say that I'm not deep into the Young Adult world, in that, there are probably hundreds of YA books out there right now that I have not read and have no intention of ever reading (ie. any John Green book). With that said, how I feel about this book, as compared to my review of the first book in this trilogy, The Madman's Daughter, should not be any real indication on how much I truly do like this book. There were just a few things I wasn't too thrilled with.

The romance aspect of all Young Adult novels is one I have yet to become accustomed with. I suppose there is some truth to the saying, "sex sells", but in the case of the literature I've read, I strongly feel it can stand on its own without any need to romance whatsoever. Unfortunately, teen angst is alive and well. Younger and younger generations yearn for it in just about everything they read. You can't even pick up a mythylogical story without having that forced upon the story. Anyway, without dwelling on it too much, the only part of the book I could have done without is the obvious triangle going on between Juliet and Edward and Montgomery.

As for the rest of the book I find the storyline of Juliet and what she's made of, both inside and out, to be quite brilliant. Megan Shepherd has managed to take a timeless classic, that I honestly didn't see coming, especially in this second book, and make it relatible to today. I'm not sure if it will make this younger generation want to go out and read Frankenstein afterwards, but it's a good way to engage minds in that general direction.

This second book leaves off, somewhat, where it left off, with Juliette going back home after the island she was stranded on, to her knowledge, ends up destroyed. She thinks she left behind her two loves for good, but she couldn't be more wrong. Who does she truly love? Why? And most importantly, why is there a brain in the hatbox of her best friends fathers study? All these questions and more will be answered in this second book. And the ending does not disappoint either. It leaves the long cast of characters (friends) journeying someplace new where they can hopefully figure out their next more, but who they're traveling with and where they are going, might leave them worse off than where they were.

Summary: Inspired by The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this tantalizing sequel to Megan Shepherd's gothic suspense novel, The Madman's Daughter, explores the hidden natures of those we love and how far we'll go to save them from themselves.

Back in London after her trip to Dr. Moreau's horrific island, Juliet is rebuilding the life she once knew and trying to forget her father's legacy. But soon it's clear that someone—or something—hasn't forgotten her, as people close to Juliet start falling victim to a murderer who leaves a macabre calling card of three clawlike slashes. Has one of her father's creations also escaped the island? As Juliet strives to stop a killer while searching for a serum to cure her own worsening illness, she finds herself once more in a world of scandal and danger. Her heart torn in two, past bubbling to the surface, life threatened by an obsessive killer—Juliet will be lucky to escape alive.

Top Ten Sequels I Can't Wait To Get My Hands On

3 comments:

This should be a fairly easy list since I've been reading a lot of books that are planned to be more than just one. However, some of my choices won't be sequels but probably the 3rd in a trilogy as well. Now that I think about it, I might not have a full 10 but I shall try...

Cress by Marissa Meyer
Okay, so it's not the sequel to the Lunar Chronicles, it's one of four books. But who ISN'T excited for this book to come out? Who seriously in the realm of Young Adult books won't be taking the day off from work JUST so they can be at the bookstore when it opens to purchase it then spend the entire day devouring every last word?

Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd
This IS a sequel to, I believe, a planned trilogy? Anywho, have you read The Madman's Daughter? Anyone who reads, or claims to read, Young Adult books has definitely come across this book and read it. If you have, you are just as excited as I am to find out what happens next and will we be going back to the island or will the island inhabitants be coming to us? You only get that if you've read the book.

Hollow City by Ransom Riggs
No offense to the two books I previously mentioned but if there is a book I've been looking forward to the most, like two years, I think it's been two years now (??), it has GOT TO BE the sequel to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children! Brilliant book and so very imaginative. I'm glad he listened to his fandom and was able to squeeze out another book. Will there be a third? Look at me, I'm already looking for the next installment without having read this one yet. But I know it will be that damn good. I've got the Graphic Novel to tide me over till January.

The Serpent of Venice by Christopher Moore
Are you acquainted with Christopher Moore? If you aren't, then you need to go out right now (or go to Amazon.com and order) and pick up Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal then you can thank me after. His books are hysterical. I laugh till I cry with his books. So to be coming out with a sequel almost ten years later about a character everyone can love and love to hate is great.

Okay, so I only came up with 4 books, but it's almost 1am and I'm tired cause I've been working on my NaNoWriMo life right now! Be happy I remembered about Top Ten Tuesday enough to post this! lol

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm headed back to the world of novelists.

Another Review...

My Rating: ★★★

"The basement hallways in King's College of Medical Research were dark, even in the daytime."

My Review: This book reads like a Frankenstein movie. The idea behind a mad scientist who does experiments that are God-like in nature and therefore no one seems to understand always makes for a good movie, and a great book, if you know how to tell the story. Megan Shepherd knows how to tell a story. Her use of description really put me on the island with Juliet and her crazy ass father. As usual with Young Adult novels the element of romance and love loss is riddled throughout this book.  I could have done without the triangle between Juliet choosing Montgomery and Edward. I think the story would not have suffered in any way without it nor did it add any more element of danger and suspense with it.

When a story has a mad scientist turning animals into humans who needs a love story right? It's supposed to be based on H.G. Wells's The Island of Dr. Moreau which I must admit I have never read. Although, after reading this I'm definitely adding it to my Classic TBR list.

I think this book is the first in a planned trilogy. If so I can see how the second book would go. But if this were it then the ending was satisfying either way. I sure do hate a happy ending so allow me to break some news to you, this one does NOT have a happy ending by any stretch of the imagination. Probably because happy endings are also not exactly part in parcel to the make-up of a Young Adult novel. Nor should it be. I'm not sure why those younger than myself read YA novels but I know I don't read them expecting to find mushy romance with a little "...and they lived happily ever after" at the end.

Did you read this book? What did you think of it?

Summary: Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.

Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood.

Inspired by H. G. Wells's classic The Island of Dr. MoreauThe Madman's Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we'll do anything to know and the truths we'll go to any lengths to protect.
