Read of the Town: The Bone Season

Critics are already calling Samantha Shannon the next J.K. Rowling. If that's true then I can't wait to pick this book up and read it! Then again, which Rowling is she? As of late there are 3 different versions of J.K. Rowling: There's the Harry Potter creator, the adult novelist, and the pseudonym writer. I devoured the Harry Potter books quite easily. I attempted The Casual Vacancy but couldn't finish it. I'll give it another go soon. And as for Robert Galbraith, well, I purchased it but haven't gotten so far as reading it yet. If, when she's described as the next J.K. Rowling it's comparative to the world of witchcraft and wizardry then I'll be most interested in seeing where this goes.

I will add this book to my collection of TBR books. It's the first book kicking off the Today Shows book club series. I won't be participating in their book club but if not for it being their first choice I wonder if this author or book would be getting all this recognition? I'll weigh in with my review of course but judging by the description (found on Amazon.com) it seems very involved and intricate. Already leading me to see Harry Potter-like similarities. The subject matter however does not seem like it's for children, let alone young adults.

Synopsis:
It is the year 2059. Several major world cities are under the control of a security force called Scion. Paige Mahoney works in the criminal underworld of Scion London, part of a secret cell known as the Seven Seals. The work she does is unusual: scouting for information by breaking into others’ minds. Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare kind of clairvoyant, and in this world, the voyants commit treason simply by breathing.

But when Paige is captured and arrested, she encounters a power more sinister even than Scion. The voyant prison is a separate city—Oxford, erased from the map two centuries ago and now controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. These creatures, the Rephaim, value the voyants highly—as soldiers in their army.

Paige is assigned to a Rephaite keeper, Warden, who will be in charge of her care and training. He is her master. Her natural enemy. But if she wants to regain her freedom, Paige will have to learn something of his mind and his own mysterious motives.

The Bone Season introduces a compelling heroine—a young woman learning to harness her powers in a world where everything has been taken from her. It also introduces an extraordinary young writer, with huge ambition and a teeming imagination. Samantha Shannon has created a bold new reality in this riveting debut.

Will you be reading this book? Why?
